Saul Bass

“Symbolize and summarize" were the words Bass lived by.

Saul Bass was born in New York City in 1920. He is known as one of the best ever graphic designers for film, as he has created the credits and title sequences of over 60 films, he has often worked with directors Martin Scorsese, and especially Alfred Hitchcock on his very famous film Psycho, of which he designed the titles. Sadly he died in 1996.

One quote that really drew to my attention was this:

“I want everything we do to be beautiful. I don’t give a damn whether the client understands that that’s worth anything, or that the client thinks it’s worth anything, or whether it is worth anything. It’s worth it to me. It’s the way I want to live my life. I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares.”

It shows that Bass was extremely passionate about his work and it was mostly for his own satisfaction, no critism bothered him. He merely believed in himself.

“Design is thinking made visual.” – Saul Bass
