Ellen Lupton

Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, and graphic designer. Lupton is a 2007 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal, one of the highest honours given to a graphic designer or design educator in the U.S. What I like about Lupton is that she is very different, she is someone who worked very hard to get to where she is now and yet she is not at all stuck up. “Lupton will speak about design to anyone who will listen.”

Lupton says, “I want the exhibition to show this kind of audience – the educated general public – that graphic design has its own independent vitality. Every poster on the street is an ephemeral work of art. The mix of messages on the street parallels the mix of people walking by, their lives briefly crossing.” (Heller, S 1998: 130)

She wants to be able to share her knowledge to as much people as possible because that’s the kind of person she is. She is already a well known graphics designer but she wants to give you an idea about the meaning.

“What I would hope for the public to come away with is an understanding of design being a discipline that embraces issues, but also to see design as being everywhere.” (Heller, S 1998: 131)
