Modernism and Postmodernism

Modernism began in the 1850’s and was a new cultural movement. Modernism was based around science and the understanding of art, and responded to changes in society. Modernists expressed creatively of what they felt and it was considered 100% original and unique. Picasso is one of the examples of the modernism era.

The movement of postmodernism came right after modernism. In some ways, it can be seen as a rejection of modernism. This was due to the rapid change to technology such as television, radio, computers etc. Postmodernism kicked in after the Second World War. Roy Lichtenstein is an example of this period. Art had lost its uniqueness and postmodernism was simply recreating...

“Postmodernism is not the opposite of modernism, as it is often portrayed, but is rather broader, more inclusive, and encompasses modernism within it.”
(Berger, A 2003)
